Assassins is one of Chi-tak Li's most seminal works, originally published in 1993. Not only is it widely revered as a Li classic, but it also sent shockwaves through the entire Asian comics industry upon its release. The most extraordinary aspect of this masterpiece lies in its style, which completely overturned his previous approach. Chi-tak Li boldly reduced his signature dense cross-hatching to unleash a wild, untamed style of ink brushstrokes for the first time, demonstrating immense experimental flair and creative courage. In doing so, he fused the grand narratives, unparalleled atmospheres, and master-level personal styling of Hong Kong comics into an epic battle song that could swallow mountains and rivers.
While 'Jing Ke's assassination of the King of Qin' is a famous event destined for failure, it has spawned countless adaptations. Among them, Chi-tak Li's 1993 comcis 'Assassins' chronicles the events before Jing Ke's departure. The State of Yan summons a vanguard group of assassins—Bai Ya, Xie Wu, Fang Shi, and Xu Fu. On the surface, their mission is to locate the map and infiltrate secret tunnels to assassinate the King of Qin. In reality, these heroes and swordsmen from vastly different backgrounds are brought together to restrain Xiang Yang, the King of Qin's formidable top swordsman. Entrusted with this perilous mission in a time of crisis, these wandering outlaws eventually forge a deep, fierce bond of brotherhood, even as they face the tragic and inevitable destiny of having to slaughter their own fellow disciples.
After a 33-year absence, the universe of 'Assassins' descends once more. Under the orchestration of veteran media figure Kamshing, it returns to readers in the form of a replica edition. Setting itself apart from the original 1990s edition, this release features a large-format presentation. The 288 pages of content have not only been fully organised and edited, but also include over ten brand-new colour illustrations exclusively drawn by Chi-tak Li.
About the Author:
Chi-tak Li began his career in the comics industry in 1982. He self-published 'Tong Men Shao Nian', a prominent title which rocketed him to fame in 1987. He has since developed a distinctive art style, creating his own visual world with eerily experimental works that broke genre rules. Li’s transmedia creations transcend the boundary of comics and expand into movies, experimental theatres, literature, pop music and sculptures. The poster that he created for Hong Kong (China) local sci-fi action movie Warriors of Future has been widely praised.
Li is also well-known in the international comics scene. His comics have been published in places like Japan, Taiwan (China), Malaysia, the Mainland, France, and Italy since the 1990s. In 2016, the Hong Kong Arts Centre jointly curated Li’s solo exhibition entitled 'Li Chi-tak, Hong Kong Wizard' with the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France. He is the first Hong Kong comics artist to hold a solo exhibition at this renowned comics festival. Later, he was invited to participate in the BD Louvre project, alongside publishing the comic book titled 'Moon of the Moon' (French and Chinese versions) in 2019 & 2020.
His recent publications include romance comics 'Yum Sui', comics that pay homage to Franz Kafka's literary classics 'Kafka', children's comics 'A Little Strawberry' (2022 & 2024 Reprint Edition), 'In the Path Artworks Collection Book', 'heroes', etc.
In 2022, Hong Kong Arts Centre awarded Honorary Fellowships to Li, recognising his invaluable contribution to the arts sector in Hong Kong and the Asian region.
